Our Voices Break Open

Our Voices Break Open Project: Exploring our Identities through Poetry

Poetry is more than a secret code that you have to break in order to make your teacher happy.  We are going to start our “Break Open” project by defining poetry for ourselves.  Once we have our own definitions in place, we will do some deep wonderings about our personal identity and our membership in different communities.  We will practice communicating effectively about our own feelings and experiences through identity webs, dialogical interviews, blackout poetry, and our culminating final poem.  By the end of our mini project, we will have a beautiful poem that showcases our evolving understanding of ourselves and our community.

Essential Questions:

  • What is poetry?

  • What is identity?

  • How do I define myself?

  • How do I write effectively about my own feelings and experiences?

  • What is community?

  • What communities do I identify with
